I just signed up for this forum. So sorry, don't really understand how it works. May I ask if there is any way to find record of Jimmy Jackson, and Charlotte Davies? They were my grandparents. My mother was Myrna (Jackson) Abel. My name is Carol Ganrude. (Birth name was Joyce Marie Abel). I am an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe of the Lake Traverse Reservation. My district is Enemy Swim. I was put up for adoption at 2 years of age, along with my younger brother. I do have a half sister in Sisseton, but her information is quite sketchy. I do know that my grandfather was a medicine man, and that someone did a documentary on him. Again I appologize if what I am asking is not being presented where it should be, or in the correct manner. My email is cmganrude@charter. net Thank you for any information you might have that could at least lead me in the right direction.

Welcome carolg! I remember being new on the site. It can be a bit overwhelming with all the info which is available here. You are doing great! I can sympathize with you in your search. My mother (SWST) was adopted too, so I know how daunting the search can be. You have come to the right place to begin! I have many records for the SWO, however, only for the early years of the tribe. I find nothing yet for the names you have posted. If you can find out the names of your GGrandparents, I can probably help you. Can you give us approximate dates for these folks? You will want to start by ordering all of the death certificates you can think of. (Parents, grandparents...) Since many of the states now have these digitalized, you will not need to be as exact with death dates as you might have had to in the past. Death certificates, in some cases, will provide you with the names of the parents, spouse, DOD, and cemetery where interred. You will want to contact the vital statistics office in the state (SD) you are needing. Some of our members can help you with the more recent info regarding your parents and grandparents. There are many folks here eager to help. Give us some time to dig. :-)

Carolg, I am not finding anything for the names you posted. The only Jackson I find in early Sisseton is Nathaniel born in 1926 (SW birth register) , and Emma Pazi Jackson's heirship (NARA in KC). For the Davies name I find nothing. The Abel name may be easier if we can find a connection to John Abel. In Max Renville's land record book I find- Tipimazawin, mother of Mazakanyahma, John Abel and Anna Tukansabiciye. Martha Hapan, daughter of Iciyapehewin and John Abel. On the Elrod Roll, there are 2 Tipimazawins. One of them resided in Enemy Swim District. We have some members here with ancestry.com. I'm sure someone can come up with more.

When all else fails- GOOGLE Carol, Google the following- "Jimmy Jackson" Medicine man There is a lot of info on him. He was Ojibway. The Jimmy Jackson mentioned here was a medicine man. He was married to IDA and had a daughter named Myrna who died before he did in 1992. Might this be your mother? Did Charlotte go by the name Ida? (Middle name??) There is a wonderful obit here- www.d.umn.edu/cla/faculty/troufs/anth4616/video/Jimmy_Jackson.html

You might want to contact her by PM. What I have is- Henry F. Campbell/ Natuzi He and his family received land allotments in 1887, #1-6 He appears on the 1887 annuity roll p. 1 On the 1887 SW census, Renville District- Henry age 29 Hattie age 32 Oliver age 8 mo. Daniel age 11 George age 9 1891 Elrod Roll- Henry F. age 35 Hattie age 39 Daniel age 14 George age 12 Margaret age 9 Mable A. age 7 Oliver age 4 Fred age 3 In Max Renvilles land book- There is an entry on page 23 for Alexander D. Campbell which states his wife is Margaret and he is the father of Henry, George, Nancy, Joseph and William. All of the census pages can be found on this site. If you have trouble finding them, send me a PM and I'll make sure you get them. It would appear that this Henry is too early to be your husband's grandfather. Have you sent away for death certificates? That's a good place to begin. Start with your husband's father, and work back. If you don't have probates for his family, you may have to see if the National Archives in DC has them, since the BIA won't provide them any more. Check back often. Others may have the information you seek. Give us some dates if you can, please. That would be most helpful!

No, you're not alone. These are imageshack postings. Imageshack deletes their images if noone has looked at them for a year. Most of us are now using photobucket. They don't delete their stuff. Poor Jimmy has thousands of images posted here which no longer work. Most of the censuses here can be found at Mike Denney's Mdewakanton site. He uploaded most of his censuses using photobucket. Click on his link in the scrolling banner on top of each page. I can't imagine the hundreds of hours Jimmy spent adding documents here. It really is a shame we are at the mercy of the image hosting sites. :-(
